The final days of Coachella!!

The last day at Coachella was my birthday and it started out the night before when I got back to the campsite after Devo and my camping neighbors gave me some wine. Then in the morning they sang Happy birthday to me and swindled some tequila from some other campers for me and I made a drink with that and blue Kool-Aid Jammers, it was delicious. I didn't head into the campsite until late in the afternoon. I knew that I wanted to be at the stage Pavement was playing at early and work my way to the front and luckily Yo La Tengo was playing there in the afternoon and they are a fun band to see live. They even worked out a choreographed danced for their song "You Can Have It All". It was very cute.

After Yo La Tengo, Spoon played at the same stage. I've never really gotten into Spoon and after seeing them live my opinions didn't change much. They were okay, not terrible but not great.

THEN it was time for Pavement! I was super excited to see them, they were one of the reasons I went to Coachella. They have been broken up since I've been listening to them so I never had a chance to see them live, although I have seen Stephen Malkmus live twice. Coachella was also their first show in the U.S. since they started touring and I didn't realize but apparently when they broke up in 1999 one of their final shows was at Coachella that year.

I was really close for the show and it was great, although it was really crowded at the front and I could barely move the whole show.

After Pavement I met back up with Lauren and Dan to see Thom Yorke. I was so curious about what Thom Yorke would be doing, I've seen Radiohead three times and it's always a great show and I have say Thom Yorke really delivered in his solo act. He played all of his album "The Eraser" and then played two Radiohead songs just by himself, he played, "Airbag" and "Everything In It's Right Place". Then his band came out and they played some new songs which sounded great.

After Thom Yorke I watched a little bit of the Gorillaz. I was slightly disappointed because the band was not behind a screen with animation of the band, but I guess people wanted to see them. I was also disappointed because there had been a lot of rumors about who would come out as a guest with them, and the first song they played was the one with Snoop Dogg and on the screen WAS Snoop Dogg and I thought Snoop Dogg was actually there and I was SUPER excited but then it turned out he wasn't there so the show started off with a sad note for me. I only watched for a little bit because I was super tired and we had to wake up early the next morning so I just went back to my tent and passed out.

In the morning we work up early and just threw all of our stuff in the car and headed back to the city. It was a really beautiful drive as the sun started to rise.

It was a long trip but we finally made it back home.

Although my hair was a disaster after being in the desert for five days it literally was starting to form into dreads.

Bill Baggs State Park

A few weeks ago I went with Natan and his school friends to the Bill Baggs State park for a end of the semester picnic.

I've been to the park several times because when Natan worked at the museum regularly he gave tours there and I went on some of the trainings for the museum employees. It's a really nice park with a beautiful beach and the lighthouse there is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade county! There is also the lighthouse keepers house.

Natan gave some of the kids an impromptu tour and he got access to the lighthouse to take everyone to the top!

While I was sitting waiting for someone I saw a snake!

Whoa Sepia!

Later we hopped over the rocks...

To watch a wedding that was happening on the other side of the beach!

The view from the top of the lighthouse.

Unfortunately after this picture my camera died.

Mother's Day

Yes, I know it's a week late I'm not great at keeping to a schedule. Also, one day I will post pictures from my last day at Coachella, one day.

So last week for Mother's Day I asked my mom where she wanted to go and she answered that she wanted to spend the day at the beach and have lunch at Le Tub, a famous hamburger place on the beach.

We went to our favorite beach in Dania and it was a beautiful day.
Of course we practiced sun safety and wore our hats.

The water was beautiful and it made us both sad to think of beaches like this being ruined by the oil spill.

I've been to the beach a few times this year but it's always been too cold to go in the water but this day was perfect and it was my first swim in the ocean for the year.

We then headed to Le Tub and luckily we got there just before the lunch rush. We had never been there before and I personally would not have gone by myself because I don't eat hamburgers but it was her day her choice. And they had hotdogs.
The hamburgers were gigantic! Seriously you would have to share them with someone.

I got a chili cheese dog and it was pretty good.

The restaurant was really nice and right on the water (well the inter-coastal, which is still water) and there were plants everywhere. It did take awhile for the food to come out but they warn you about that on the menu so I was expecting it.

All in all it was a really great day.

Coachella: Saturday

By Saturday the heat was getting to everyone, including my water bottle! The design was melting off!

We tried to find shade anywhere we could at the campsite.

For lunch that day we bought avocados, tomatoes and cheese from the farmers market and made really delicious sandwiches. It was the best thing I ate all weekend but I didn't take a picture. After lunch I headed into the grounds to see John Waters!

He was hilarious and it was very informative but I can't post my new learnings here because it is definitely NSFW
I even got him to sign my book!

Lauren and I went to see Camera Obscura while Dan waited to meet MGMT. But Camera Obscura was really not impressive so after one song we went to chill in the lawn and listen to Old Crow Medicine Show.

Lauren wonders why bluegrass bands sing so much about cocaine.

Next up for me was Beach House. They were another of my favorites. The show was fantastic. I was worried that their dreamy pop music wouldn't hold up in a big outdoor tent but they sounded great. I would love to see them again.

I took a lot of picture while listening to Hot Chip and MGMT. They were both great, just perfect for a night show.

Hot Chip: an explosion of light

In between Hot Chip and MGMT I went to see a little bit of Faith No More, just so I could tell Natan that I went.

MGMT emerging from the fog.

After MGMT I headed over to see Major Lazer. It was as crazy as you could imagine.

When Major Lazer finished I inched by way further into the tent to get a good spot for DEVO, but first I had to sit (well stand) through Les Claypool. I felt neutral towards him before and feel the same after seeing him. Although it was funny a. because I was surrounded by a bunch of young, pot smoking dudes and b. because this guy kept yelling "Be awesome Les" before the show. Be awesome.
Finally, it was time for DEVO and my birthday! because DEVO played at midnight, it was an awesome way to ring in my birthday.
